Why You Should Consider a Spring Photo Session
If the weather is changing and you find yourself in the beginning or middle of spring and wondering whether you should do a photo session now or wait, here are some things to consider. It seems that autumn is often deemed “photography season”, but there are many reasons you may want to consider a spring session instead of or in addition to another season.
You love blossoms. Maybe you are as obsessed with blossoms as I am. If so, this is your season because of the jaw-dropping beauty that surrounds you whenever you are out of your house. If you as a small business owner want your social media feeds filled with these beautiful blossoms, now is your time! If you are looking for beautiful family photos, this is a great time to take advantage of the rare scenery. Blossoms last only for a very short time, sometimes not more than a few days in places like Calgary where the wind might rip them from the trees they bloomed on only a few days earlier. Because there is not much time to take advantage of the blossoms, your images will be very unique… whether gracing your social media or hanging on the wall in your living room.
Your closet is filled with pastels or colors that go well with pastels. If you love pastel colors or pinks of all shades… spring was practically made for you! This is your time of year to dress up your family and turn them into a work of art. With many shades of blossoms in white, pink, purple and other such colors… this is a great time to coordinate your outfits with nature.
Speaking of clothing, spring is the first chance after a long winter to finally get out of the house wearing something not so heavy. Toss that winter jacket in storage and pull out your cute outfits that you’ve been waiting to show off! Now is your long-awaited chance!
Another great reason for choosing a spring photo session is to get your photos done before things get too busy in summer. Once traveling and summer activities start, things can get a little hectic… so spring is a perfect time to take care of it so your planned session doesn’t come between you and potential activities later on.
If you are a fan of neither extreme cold nor extreme heat, spring generally has moderate weather. You will likely be physically comfortable during your session without the worries that fall at opposite ends of the temperature spectrum, such as frostbite or sunburn.
Something unfortunate that warm Calgary weather brings along with it is mosquitoes. A spring photo session minimizes this concern, as they generally have not made their appearance yet. Mosquitoes choose to drive us crazy in the summer, so we can outsmart them by showing up in the great outdoors before they are able to.
You love the light and airy look for your photos. The blossoms and new growth in nature lend themselves to a clean, light and airy look. If this is the style you love, spring is a desirable time to use nature as your backdrop.
Perhaps you are a business with a brand that centres around wellness. Spring is a time of new growth and with nature as your setting… this new growth and symbolism of life will be reflected in your images.
Many photographers prefer the golden hour for portraits, which is the hour before sunset. The warm light is extremely flattering and beautiful, and makes for amazing images. A huge benefit of a spring session is that golden hour falls during a time frame that is fairly convenient for many individuals and families. It is neither too early and interrupting one’s typical work hours, such as in winter… nor too late requiring little ones to stay up past their bedtime, such as in summer.
All in all, spring is an excellent time for a photo session and it is one of my favourite seasons to do outdoor photographs. I generally spend several weeks scouring the city in my vehicle and on foot, looking for the perfect blossom locations, and then opening up a few sessions to my clients (generally the most spontaneous ones, since searching for blossoms tends to be a bit of a wild adventure with many last minute changes in plans.) Blossoms are not the only beautiful aspect of spring though and even without them, spring is an amazing time for photos. If you are in the Calgary area and you are interested in either a portrait, headshot or personal brand session this spring, get in touch with me and let’s begin planning!
